Day 1: United Learning Centre

Our first day of social engagement began at 6.30 am where we gather all the facilitators at UM Sentral. After make sure all the facilitators had arrived and all the materials brought, we start our journey to our destination which is the United Learning Center in Kuala Lumpur, at 7 o’clock by five cars. The activities for the first day of our social engagement at ULC include;

1          ICE BREAKING (8.15 AM – 9.30 AM)
Ice breaking session started with an introducing session to get to know with all these students. After they introduced their names one by one, we continued with some physical activity to warm up after they have a light breakfast, which is bread. We did a dance called Gummy Bear Dance and “Ciketum” Dance as a starting of the morning activity. Most of the students of the ULC are very happy to follow our facilitators’ move to the dance, especially the younger ones. Then we divided the students into 10 groups and proceed with some casual interactions or interviews with the students. After a few minutes of chatting, by using the same grouping, we continue with colouring activity.

2          COLOURING (9.30 AM – 10.30 AM)
For colouring activity, we randomly gave about 80 pictures for them to colour. Each of group are provided with a box of colour pencils. For the older ones, they didn’t really prefer to colour the pictures, they want to draw something. So we chose to give them drawing blocks and they can freely draw whatever they imagine. It is a great way to get to know their minds, imaginations and thinking.

3          MY DREAM (10.30 AM – 12 PM)
My Dream activity focused on how these students imagine themselves in 10 years later.  So again, we provide them with drawing blocks and other stationeries we have. On that plain paper, they freely imagine and draw something about what they would be in 10 years later, how their life is would be and what are the materials they want to have in the future. While they are drawing, we observed and have a little chat with them. Most of them have a big ambition – want to be a doctor, an engineer of aerospace and civil, football player, nurse, biology teacher and soldier. In fact, they are very talented in drawing because we can see a lot of beautiful drawing. After they finished with their drawing, they required to present and explain on what they had drawn. Most of them were very shy especially the girls, but we managed to persuade them to go in front and talk.

4          BREAK / SOLAT (12 PM – 2.30 PM)
We distributed the food that we ordered to all students and facilitators for lunch and also prepared a cold and fresh orange cordial. We have provided fried rice, fried kue teaw and fried noodles to them. We eat together and give the students a moment of break. At around 1.30 pm, all the Muslim facilitators went to the nearest mall to perform the Zuhr and the guys performed their Jumm’ah at Al-Bukhari mosque, Jalan Hang Tuah. During the break, we took a chance to buy some of the insufficient stuff that we need to serve the students like a bottle of cordial and few packets of ice. We then quickly went back to the ULC to continue the next session.

5          ORIGAMI AND PAPER PLANE CONTEST (2.30 PM – 4.00 PM)
Soon after the break, we gather them once again to teach origami. The facilitators later distribute papers to them. In this activity, we teach them step by step on how to fold those papers until it becomes the shape of a cat’s face, a boat and a bird. After we teach all the three shapes, we asked them to build their own paper planes. Once they have finished, we held a paper plane competition. Planes that can travel the furthest would be the winner. They really enjoyed the game and we had a fun time during this activity.

6          MUSICAL (4.00 PM – 5.30 PM)
For musical activity, we randomly divided the students into four groups. Each group will have a few facilitators to guide them and give some ideas for their performance. We gave them for about an hour to practice. The performance can be anything related to musical such as dance and singing. After done the practice, we quickly arrange all the chairs as a preparation for the performance. All the four groups as well as facilitators did their musical performance very well. The judges then calculated their marks and decided the winners based on their creativity, cooperation and overall performance. We have provided the prizes for them in order to motivate these students to enhance their talents in the future. We can see the face of happiness when they received the prizes.

The second musical activity was the musical chair. While we were waiting for the closing ceremony event, we were again arranging all the chairs in a big circle. We played a different kind of music while the students carefully round the circle. We involved all students to join this activity because we believed it is really fun activity to do, even they are from different background and ages.

7          CLOSING CEREMONY (5.30 PM – 6.30 PM)
We end the first day by organising a simple closing ceremony. Our project director, Lau Li Yang thanked the head of ULC, Mr. Jonathan and all the students in his speech. Mr. Jonathan was very glad and had welcomed us to join the voluntary teaching for the ULC students anytime. We gave Mr. Jonathan a souvenir from UM as an appreciation and also a memory from us. The closing ceremony ended with a song, Count on Me, sang together by all the facilitators and ULC students.

8          CLEANING (6.30 PM – 7.00 PM)
After a long day of activities, the whole team cleaned the place. We arranged all the chairs and tables back to its places, swept the floor and picked up all the rubbish. All the activities material were put back in our cars.

9          POST-MORTEM (8.30 PM)

Our post-mortem began after all the facilitators have their dinner in UM. Each facilitator gave some reflections on how our first day’s work and how to improve all the weaknesses in the next two days. Our director then urged all the facilitators’ cooperation and efforts to make our social engagement project become successful.
