NOT THE END

Today is the day we performed our Social Engagement performance!

We are the sixth to perform in front of students from different departments in our faculty. The performance started with some explanation and details about our project by Shafee followed by the  Bollywood dance as our opening gimmick. We then showed a drama representing the actual situation and activities during our project. It was then followed by Miza reading out her reflection and thoughts about social engagement programme with montage videos as the background. The performance ended with us singing a song, "Count on Me" and flying out paper planes to the audience.

We did our best, and most importantly, we enjoyed it much. It can been seen through the smiles we showed during the entire performance. We were even happier when we saw many supports and shoutouts from the audience and the joy they had from watching our performances.

Congratulations to each one of us! Though we did not win, we defeated obstacles and challenges, we did our best and most importantly, we enjoyed the moments.

Thank you to Puan Wan Sharina and seniors for the continuous and endless support from the beginning. Thanks to anyone who has supported us through ups and downs. Thanks to those who cheered for us during our performance. Hope you guys enjoyed the show as much as we did.

Social Engagement experiences have brought remarkable impacts to each one of us. Social Engagement has brought in awareness of the responsibilities that await us in our communities. This is not the end, this is just a beginning of our journey for a more engagement and interactions. This is the beginning of a more active role in being part of the community. More challenges and obstacles may await us. But with the spirit we have, we'll overcome them. And those rougher roads are what will make us grow and be better.

Practices and Rehearsals for Social Engagement Performance

It's a day before our social engagement performance!

On Friday, we refined all the concepts of our performance and together with all the committee members practiced for several times. It looks awkward at first, but practices made it better and better.

At 3pm, Puan Wan, our advisor came to see our practices. We then did a rehearsal in front of her and some seniors from our department. Puan Wan then provided some constructive feedback and pointed out some loopholes that we could improve. The seniors from our department also commented and described the overall situation during the programme last year. They all provide much encouragement to us to perform on the next day! Before Puan Wan left, she gave some Ringgit for our after-practice snacks!

We are really grateful to have such a wonderful and caring lecturers and seniors! Hopefully we can make you all proud tomorrow!

Curious about our performance? Come and join us on Saturday! See you!

Day 3: Al-Ansaar Learning Centre and Surau Baitul-Islah

On Sunday, we gathered at UM Sentral at 7am and departed for Al-Ansaar Learning Center located at Jalan Taman Tasik Tambahan in Ampang. As we arrived to the location, we then set up the location and prepared for breakfast. The kids then had their breakfast and the committees used some spare time to engage with the children and to learn about their stories.

Physical Activities [9.00-11.00]

After all the kids came and had their breakfast, we had physical activities where we did penguin dance, gummy bear, and other physical activities.  Then, we also do musical chairs’s competition for boys and girls separately.

When we were conducting the physical activities session, our advisor, Madam Wan Sharina came to visit and oversee our program. She met with Madam Salina and had a small discussion with her.
During physical activities, some of the facilitators helped the volunteer teachers to arrange the donated clothes inside classroom based on the size so that it would be easier to be distributed to the students.

Movie Watching [11.00-12.30]

At around 1pm, we showed a movie entitled Nanny McPhee for the students to enjoy. However, there are some challenges as some students could not sit still in their seats and walked around.
Madam Salina gave some talks and advises to the kids about the importance of moral values (akhlaq), especially about respect and being kind, responsible and helpful to each other.

Lunch & Closing Ceremony [12.30-14.30]

At 1pm, the kids had their lunch and some of us used the opportunities to engage with the kids personally.

As the kids finished eating their lunch and cakes, we conduct a simple closing ceremony. During the ceremony, winners of the games were announced and gifts were given to the winners. Besides the gifts for the winner, each kid was given a package of door-gift as a token of appreciation from us. At the end of the ceremony, the kids were happy to eat the cakes that Madam Wan Sharina had bought.
Before the children went back to their own places, we distributed the donated clothes to them.

Post-Mortem with Madam Salina & Clean-Up  [14.30-16.00]

After all the activities with the kids ended and the kids went home, we had a short post-mortem with Madam Salina. She praised us on how independently we conducted the activities and how we cleaned up the site very well. However, he mentioned that some of our activities are not parallel to the objective of the Centre which focuses on Islamic Studies. We took that as an advice so we should be more careful in planning and managing the agendas and activities and matching them with the community’s focus and objectives.

In addition, Madam Salina also seek comments and constructive feedback that we can give for the betterment of the Centre. She also encouraged us to come again and help the Centre in any way that is convenient for us

After the post-mortem session, we clean up the site and packed our tools and logistics. Then, the Muslims prayed Zuhur prayer at Surau Al-Islah. We used the spare time we had to take some rest before the next activity.

Gotong Royong in Cleaning Surau Baitul Islah. [16.00-19.00]

At around 4pm we gathered at Surau Baitul Islah at Kampung Sri Taman Baru Ampang. We were greeted warmly by the Surau Management (AJK Surau). As we heard the Azan, the muslims then prayed Asar prayer. After Asar prayer, an uncle from the Surau Management then announce that we would be having a gotong-royong in cleaning the Surau and invited the nearby residents to join us, students from University of Malaya.

Together with some of the Kampung residents, we started cleaning the mosque. We swept and mopped the floor, clean the carpet with vacuum cleaner, wipe the windows, cleaned the ablution (wudhu) area and etc.  As we do our works, we engaged and initiated conversations and the discussion with the local people. Some of them are even UM Alumni.

After we clean the mosque, we ate the dinner provided by the Surau together with the Kampung residents. We ate Mee Goreng (Fried Noodle) and Cucur Udang accompined with the red syrup. At the end, we had a sharing session with Tok Ketua Kampung (Leader of the Village). Tok Ketua Kampung explained about the history of the village and explained how happy they are in receiving students to engage with them. They hope that this would be continuous and more activities like this should be organised to connect university  students with the communities. It is one of memorable activities as the local people accept us happily, warmly, and sincerely.

Before Maghrib, at around 7pm, we tidied up our cleaning tools and headed back to UM!

Helping A Refugee (Special Case)

When we were having our breakfast, an adult refugee came to the centre and shared Madam Salina about his problem. He told that his wife was just delivered a baby girl in Ampang Hospital, and she has a mental disorder. Madam Salina asked her assistant, Hafsah, to help the man by giving a contact number of a donor who will usually give help to the centre. However, due to the language barrier, her assistant needed some helps from a malay students to talk to the donor with Malay Language. After we called the donor, we decided to go to Ampang Hospital because the donor cannot make any decision because it is a strange case. Arissshea drove Fatin, Shafee, and Ms Hafsah and the man to Ampang Hospital to help discharging his wife. After seeing his wife condition, Arisshea and Shafee bought necessary things needed by mother and the newly born baby.

Ice-Breaking Session [9.00-11.00]

Meanwhile at the Centre, we conducted ice breaking with the kids to get to know and build a bond between the children and the us. Before that, we divided them into a few groups. Among the games we conducted were, “Cheer Creation”, “Dogs and Bones” “Simon Says…”, and “Paper-Plane”. During the cheer station, the children competed to create the best cheer their group could have and presented it afterward.

In “Dogs and Bones” game, students were divided into two lines, and they will compete each others to snatch the plastic bottle put in the middle between two line. Then, we head-counted  the children and they all have to remember their number from 1-19. When the facilitator shout one of the number from 1-19, the the kid representing the called number have to snatch the bottle. Group 2 won at the end.

In “Simon Says” game, students should only obey the order if the sentence starts with “Simon Says” and those who did the order without the beginning of “Simon says..” will be disqualified. The last session, the LAC students played “Paper-Plane contest”  where they were taught to make a paper plane and compete whose one would be the fastest and could reach the furthest.

In this session, the children were able to sharpen their mind and focus, improve their brotherhood/sense of togetherness while at the same time enjoyed the whole session.

Story-Telling Session [11.00-12.00]

This session was conducted from 11am to 12pm in the classroom. During this session, Athirah told the children the story of Prophet Yunus and how he survived from being eaten by the whale “Nun”. At the end of the session, there were a few questions asked about the story to the children and those who answered correctly were given gifts. The children enjoyed the story and were interactive in answering the questions given.

Frame-Making Session [12.00-13.00]

This session is conducted by group 1 from 12pm to1pm. In this session, children worked in a group and facilitated by two facilitators to create a frame by using materials needed. The children were allowed to use their creativity and ideas to create what they want. Though it was quite hard to control the crowd at first, the facilitators were able to provide support and guidance throughout the session. Students were able to create their frames and apply their ideas and creativity through the session, either through drawing & painting, cutting & pasting, and many other means.

Lunch & Prayer Break [13.00-14.00]

After the students dispersed and went back home, Madam Salina gave some feedback and words of appreciation and encouragement of what we have done today, as well as getting to know further details about tomorrow’s session. After that, we had our lunch and prayed Zohor and got some rest before continuing our project.

Clean-Up: Al-Ansaar Learning Centre [14.00-16.30]

After praying Zohor, we helped out to arrange and clean the Learning Centre. We rearranged the books in bookshelf, swept the floor, and cleaned the classroom. There was not much challenges in doing this works.

Clean-Up: Surau Al-Islamiah [16.30-18.30]

We then went to Al-Islamiah Mosque and the muslims prayed Asar in the Mosque. After prayer, we then were warmly greeted by Pakcik-Pakcik AJK Surau (the prayer house management) and we introduced ourselves to them. The Management gave us some guideline and also provided some materials needed for cleaning. We then started cleaning up the mosque together using the equipments we brought and the equipments provided. Among the works we did were: cleaning the toilets, cleaning wudu' area, wiping the windows, sweeping & mopping the floor etc. As we did our works, we were also able to engage and had some conversations with Pakcik - Pakcik (Uncles) there. We were also provided with snacks and drinks by the Mosque Management. Although it is a little tiring, the feeling when you see the results of our works after the clean-up was indeed satisfying.
